Folded Saw Back

The stiff spine of a back saw is the core of a fine wood working saw.  The saw back gives the saw plate the stiffness it needs to allow for extreme control of the saw during cutting, it also places the tension on the saw plate that allows for consistent straight cutting with no drift if the saw blade has been sharpened and set correctly.  Because of the tension the saw back puts onto the saw plate it controls how straight the toothline is on a saw.  If the saw is wavy in the middle it usually just takes a light tap on the nose of the saw back to adjust it back into tension and straighten it out.  The other possibility is if the toothline has a curve in it the usual problem is the saw back isn’t perfectly straight so bending it a little in the opposite direction of the bend will usually straighten the tooth line out.  

For hundreds of years the back to a fine woodworking back saw has been made out of a folded piece of steel or brass.  The tension created by the fold and pinching power of that folded piece of metal is a tried and true method of keeping a saw running and together without problems for a really really long time.  There are many 150+ year old saws still around that are or could become fine user saws that have a folded back.  This is why I am offering folded saw backs instead of a milled brass back that has become popular recently.  With a folded saw back all you need to do is tap the back onto the saw blade, make a few adjustments and your saw will be good to go for the next 100+ years.  With a folded back there is no need for the use of epoxy, a pin or the need to try to smash the slot perfectly even by a few thousandths like you would need to with a milled saw back.

These Saw backs are folded 360 brass backs that have been placed in an endmill and milled across the bottom to ensure that the base is perfectly flat for a precise fit in your saw handle.  These folded saw backs have not been polished so that is up to the user to sand up the grits to their desired sheen.  These are reasonably clean saw backs so it does not take a ton of time to sand them down.
